A Night in Paris, a Day in Prayer

On Monday, September 21, 2015, Sacred Heart-Griffin High School kicked off their Spirit Week. The day’s theme was both Add-On Day and Day of Prayer.

Although students had to remain in uniform for the day, they were allowed to accessorize with scarves and ties. Grace Conlon, a freshman, applauded the day. “It didn’t make it too hard to find an outfit,” she said. “Also, it really dressed up my uniform.”

Many students added scarves and ties to their outfits, ranging from one scarf to 12 ties draped across the body.

The most important part of the day was that it was the prayer service. Being a Dominican school, SHG holds a prayer service at the start of Spirit Week to reflect the theme for homecoming in a prayerful way. The prayer service was held in place of the theology classes of the day.

The 2015 SHG homecoming theme is “A Midnight in Paris.” Before the Monday even started, the student council members and the O.P. Teen members helped decorate the SHG chapel to show the theme. The chapel was decorated with lights, stars and even a little Parisian café. The chairs of the chapel were meticulously arranged in the shape of a heart.

The prayer service itself was lovely. Many SHG students participated in the service, whether it was reading or preaching. Student Body President and senior Megan Schultz preached three times in the day, and she never got bored. “In all the periods that I experienced the Day of Prayer, I was never bored,” she explained. “I was able to take away a valuable lesson from each hour to apply to my personal life. Every period was unique due to wonderful readers and preachers. I loved seeing the visions of the Day of Prayer come to life throughout the services.”

Many people took away lessons from the Day of Prayer, but everyone is really ready for the end of the week, when Midnight in Paris will be in the gym at homecoming. Grace Conlon said, “I was excited for homecoming before, but [after the day] I am totally more pumped!”
