Superb Super Bowl Commercials

Super Bowl 50 was played on Sunday, February 7, 2016, ending with a 24-10 win of the Denver Broncos against the Carolina Panthers. With superstar Lady Gaga acing the National Anthem, and Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé rocking halftime, over 114.4 million people watched this historic game. While many watched the football game for the game itself, many others watched solely for headline-making, exclusive Super Bowl commercials. With many companies devoting millions of dollars for a thirty second ad, they are always sure to please.

Although this year there weren’t any heartwarming ads about lost puppies or puppy/clydesdale love, there was an ad featuring lots and lots of puppies. Heinz Ketchup’s Super Bowl commercial featured many Dachshunds, adults and puppies alike, dressed as hot dogs. These dogs proceeded to run towards a family of Heinz ketchup, mustard and other condiments, jumping on and licking them and having fun. Heinz celebrated this ad with the hashtag #MeettheKetchups.

Another favorite commercial of mine was the NFL’s “Super Bowl Babies” music video. The NFL isn’t a regular sponsor of the Super Bowl commercial-wise, but in honor of Super Bowl 50, it created a cute music video. It starts with Super Bowl Babies born in 2008 wearing New York Giants hats, scarves and coats and the words “Data suggests 9 months after a Super Bowl victory, winning cities see a rise in births. They’re called Super Bowl Babies.” The video proceeds to show Super Bowl Babies of an assortment of victory years and a few “Super Bowl Parents.” It was a cute little testament to past Super Bowls.

In my third favorite commercial, by Hyundai, actor Kevin Hart acted as a father whose teenage daughter was going on a date. He let her date take his car and tracked them all around town while they were on their date. He followed them to the movies and to the fair, even spying on them from a helicopter. The commercial made me and the entirety of my Super Bowl party attendants, a large portion of whom are parents, laugh very hard.

Coming in at a very close second, the Doritos “Ultrasound” commercial also made it on the list. In this commercial, a woman is going in for an ultrasound. Her husband stands by her side eating a bag of nacho cheese Doritos. On the monitor, we see the baby reaching for the husband’s Dorito. The husband moves the Dorito around, making the baby chase after it. The mother eventually takes the Dorito from her husband and throws it across the room. The baby proceeds to follow and everyone, the mother, father, and doctor begin to freak out.doritos_super_b-c6ab2104908-original

My number one favorite commercial was the Mtn. Dew Kickstart commercial entitled “Puppy Monkey Baby.” It featured a hybrid puppy, monkey, and baby that crashes an apartment. All the hybrid says throughout the commercial is “Puppy Monkey Baby” and, at one point, licks the face of one of the men in the apartment between words. It’s a mix of terrifying, strange and cute; and in my opinion, is absolute perfection.1-mountain-dew-super-bowl-ad-puppy-monkey-baby

I adored the Super Bowl commercials this year, as I always have. They were a joy to watch and the game would not have been as fun or entertaining without them. From touching, to funny, to creepy, there was certainly a commercial for everyone.

Panic! for this Amazing Album

Filled with songs spanning many genres, “Death of a Bachelor,” the fifth studio album by American band Panic! at the Disco, definitely made an impression. P!ATD fans have waited three years for this album to release on January 15, 2016. “Death of a Bachelor” songs range from catchy melodies like “Victorious” to spooky tunes like “Emperor’s New Clothes.”

Panic! at the Disco’s previous album, “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!,” was released in October 2013. This album was clearly defined as party music, inspired by dance and hip-hop music. The songs of “Death of a Bachelor” however, cannot be defined as one specific genre.

Brendon Urie, the lead vocalist and sole member of Panic! at the Disco, said that the “Death of a Bachelor” album was made “in honor of those times I spent alone as a kid. Allowing music to consume me.” This album is a compilation of all the music that Urie wanted to write and listen to.

“Emperor’s New Clothes” has an obvious Halloween vibe. This song was released in October 2015. The song speaks of “taking back the crown” and rising above your enemies to power. Once I listen to this song, along with almost every other song of the album, it gets stuck in my head. With such a unique, repetitive sound, and a solid rhythm, I catch myself singing this song all the time.

The fast-paced song, “LA Devotee,” always makes me want to dance. Living in a fast-paced city (Los Angeles) and trying to keep up and thrive in it is the theme of the song. In the ever-moving world we live in, this song is one I can relate to.

“Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time” is an alternative-rock song in the album. The cool and catchy tune keeps me singing this song all day, with its easy-to-remember lyrics and a guitar melody that is similar to Fall Out Boy’s “Uma Thurman.”

The main and most important  song of the album is, obviously, “Death of a Bachelor.” Brendon Urie dedicated the song to his wife, Sarah Urie, and to Frank Sinatra, in memory of his 100th birthday. Urie described the song as “very Sinatra-esque…with this beat that sounds like Beyoncé’s ‘Drunk In Love.’” I could not agree more. The unique, jazzy feel of the song along with the modern beat makes it memorable and stand out from the rest of the album.

With so many genres to choose from, “Death of a Bachelor” is an album that is always exciting and entertaining.. Filled with so many different and exciting sounds, “Death of a Bachelor” has a song for every mood you are in.

Five Years Forward

Photo courtesy of the “Pretty Little Liars” Facebook account.

Got a secret, can you keep it? “Pretty Little Liars” is a teen drama centered around the disappearance of Alison DiLaurentis, a popular ringleader and an unknown stalker who blackmails the friends of the missing ringleader. This television drama aired in 2010 and has produced six seasons of mind-boggling mysteries that the characters Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily must uncover.
The show is currently in the middle of its sixth season, however the last half of the sixth season will be quite different. The characters and setting of the show has jumped ahead five years later, showing the girls in their adult lives.
The age change is an interesting jump, given that for the past five and a half seasons, the girls have been playing high school students. “We literally wrapped one episode one day and made the time jump the next day,” series creator Marlene King explains.
I am personally much more excited for the second half of the season because I felt very bored by the fact that they portrayed high school students for five years. The shift changes the viewpoint of the show and allows the cast to play roles closer to their actual age.
Even though they will be acting as adults, the drama and stalking from high school remains present in their lives. Their baggage follows them and new secrets will surface. King says, “A lot can happen in five years.”
The new episode was revealed January 12, 2016. The beginning of the episode showed the high school hallways where the four girls attended. While the camera panned through the hallway, the past voices of the girls played throughout, almost like it was haunting the halls.
Alison DiLaurentis, the ringleader, is shown working in her new profession as a high school teacher. It’s fitting for her young-minded character, almost as if she wants to stay in high school.
A court hearing is introduced to Alison by the doctor of her sister, Charlotte, also known as the anonymous stalker that has tormented the girls for years. Alison writes letters to all the girls in hopes that they will come back to their small town, Rosewood, and petition for Charlotte to be released.
Scenes of the girls living their separate lives were shown after Alison sent the letters. Seeing them all apart was so strange.
They all agree to come back to Rosewood to speak with Alison about the court case. They reunite at the old coffee shop they used to hang out at. When they reunite, the friendship is still there but the vibe is so different because they have all spent so much time apart.
The producers even changed the intro to the show; instead of having only Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily in it, they added Alison. The whole episode had the same people, the same drama, but it is all so different due to the fact that they are living adult lives.
What is not so different is that Alison asks the four girls to lie to the judge to petition that Charlotte be released from the sanitarium. The four girls are torn because they don’t want to fall back into old habits centered around lying for Alison. However, their hesitation about lying for Alison is short-lived.
Spencer, Hanna, and Emily all state that would not be concerned for their safety if Charlotte is released. However, Aria tells the judge that she would feel unsafe with Charlotte being released. Aria is the only one standing up for the truth, a change from who she was in high school.
Unfortunately, Aria’s honesty doesn’t persuade the judge, as Charlotte is released. In an unexpected turn, hours after Charlotte is released she is reported dead due to suicide.
In the final scene, the four girls are gathered at Charlotte’s funeral. This scene actually mirrors the funeral scene from the series pilot episode. The similarities are riveting and it definitely encourages the fact that the same drama from Rosewood is far from over.

Not As Scary As Expected

Want to watch a scary Christmas movie that makes you scream, hold your breath, and jump out of your seat every other scene? Then do not see “Krampus,” which premiered December 4, 2015. The movie was as spooky and realistic as the 1984 film “Gremlins,” which was very cheesy.

As far as horror films go, “Krampus” was disappointing. After watching the chilling movie trailer, I expected a cool and creepy movie about the monster Krampus attacking a broken family. Instead, I laughed at most of the movie. I must have jumped (in fright) maybe two times throughout the entire movie. The film also took some bizarre plot routes.

hqdefault

Aside from the scary movie not being scary, it was rather entertaining. I could compare many of the people in the movie to my own family members, and the movie did give a good glimpse into the stresses of the holiday season. I found myself giggling at many of the “creepy” characters, such as Krampus’ evil gingerbread henchmen and “Purge” mask-wearing elves. (I know it sounds odd, but they both were in the movie.)

krampus-movie-bell-image

Although the plot seemed drawn out and took many different twists and turns, it was rather easy to follow. I was pleased with the ending of the film. I found the ending of the movie rather interesting. The ending is happy, but then the family is reminded of Krampus.

I give this movie two and a half stars out of five. “Krampus” was not scary, which really disappointed me, but I was entertained watching it. If you are looking for a scary Christmas movie, then “Krampus” is not a good choice. If you are looking for a more humorous and different Christmas movie to see with your friends or even family, then go ahead and watch “Krampus.” I just recommend that you do not waste your money to see the movie in the theatre.

The SHG Choir Shines

Wednesday, September 4, 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of SHG’s choir’s Dessert & Dazzle, a showcase and fundraiser used to benefit the music department headed by Mr. Bill Bauser and Mrs. Karen Danner. “It has been wonderful seeing how Dessert & Dazzle has transformed,” said Bauser. “The kids also seem to really enjoy it.”

Members of the Combined Chorus sang to the piano played by Mrs. Danner and the percussion of three members of the SHG band. Juniors Colleen O’Brien, Sabrina Johnston, and Gabrielle Johnston also played the piano in the commons before the event and during intermission. Photo albums depicting the evolution of SHG’s choir, including pictures from Sacred Heart Academy, were laid out on tables in the commons.

The first half of the event took place in the East Campus gym. For the first time in Dessert & Dazzle history, the event did not take place at the Hoogland Center for the Arts. Guests were seated around circular tables and the choir sang on risers in front of a colored background. While some members of the choir were singing, others were making sure water cups were full and the guests were satisfied.

The choir girls sang an a cappella version of Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” made famous by 2012 movie “Pitch Perfect.” Alumni from the past ten years, including our own Ms. Hoemann, joined current students, to sing the music department’s theme song, “Why We Sing.” Senior Devin Boehme said, “It was so nice being able to sing with the girls that graduated last year. We formed a really close connection and it was nice to have that back again.”

The first half concluded and dessert was served. Choir members walked around to tables handing out pieces of cakes and pies, among other things. Guests were treated to water and tea. Guests were also able to get up and stretch after listening to the first half.

The second half of the night took place in the auditorium. It consisted of a more lively display of the choir’s talent, including not only singing, but dancing. The choir did a medley of the 1992 Disney movie “Aladdin,” complete with full choreography.

Dessert & Dazzle was a huge success, as it has been in the past, and should be for years to come.

Made in the A.M.

Scratch your iTunes cards and redeem your account, the One Direction album, “Made in the A.M.,” is available to purchase! The charming British boy band has done it yet again.

one direction
The cover art of One Direction’s fifth album “Made in the A.M.” released November 13th.

One Direction consists of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne. Their fifth album captures a harmony that simply causes a euphoric dance. From rhythmic, complex melodies to simple-four chord lullabies, the boys have captured valuable expression into an album.

The style of the album is seemingly different than the other four albums they have produced. It is different due to the fact that band member Zayn Malik has resigned. Malik was a key singer in the band and he added a lot of soul to the previous albums. Even though the tempo feels different when you listen to it, the album still has a vast amount of potential.

I think One Direction is creating and forming a new style. They are not the same boys they were five years ago. They are edgier with their lyrics and they’ve gone to different lengths to achieve a new sound. This new sound, in my opinion, is something folksy and festive.

Looking back at their first album, it’s very modern and pop-culture oriented. I think they’re trying to embrace a new image and this is their way from moving on from the exile of Zayn, which is very appropriate.

Let’s talk about a few personal favorite songs of mine. My first favorite would have to be “I Want to Write You a Song.” The song begins with a simple acoustic feel, nothing too intricate. It then slowly progresses into a very soulful anthem.

When I listen to songs, I like to imagine the setting and vibe I attain from it. When I hear this song, I remember when I was under the stars in Colorado, roaming near a valley. In that moment, I felt very spiritual and I really appreciated the beauty of my surroundings.

Everything just felt so simple. The song is very simple and beautiful, just like how I felt in Colorado. When I hear the song, it makes me think of that time and I  love it even more.

I really applaud Louis Tomlinson’s vocal cords in this song. They are very soft and raspy, they are not overpowering. His voice is almost endearing when I hear this song.

Another personal favorite from the album is “A.M.” The ballad opens with Harry Styles singing the refrain, no music playing behind him. I believe this opens up the song perfectly because it gives you a chance to really hear his voice without the distractions of the background music.

I’m in love with the chorus when this song plays. There is a light beat of a drum and a subtle sound of an electric guitar that isn’t overpowering. I’m not being dramatic when I say this song makes my heart feel whole.

Niall Horan provides imagery when he comments, “It’s pretty much self-explanatory. Just sitting around with your friends at the end, you can picture it, it’s like the end of the night after a big party and there’s a few of you left and you’re just sitting around talking [nonsense].”

Another song that I quite enjoy is “History.” It begins with a celebrated, coordinated clapping, and then the guitar comes in to add a cheeky little melody. This song represents the teamwork between the fans and the band, especially the lyrics “You and me got a whole lot of history, so don’t let it go, we can make some more. We can live forever.”

Horan explains when he says, “It talks about the history between us and the fans, all the time we spent on the road, the crew, the people who have been with us from day one. It’s just history of everything, everything about the last five years.”

Tomlinson elaborates, “It’s just a perfect song actually for the timing now and for everything. For us to give that message across to the fans, I think is really really cool.”

Yet another personal favorite of mine is “Wolves.” This little tune is really different from their other previous songs. The beginning of the song starts out almost like a jazz song. It then transforms into their usual sound.

The song is about the band saving a girl from the not-so excellent guys one will meet in life. They sing, “One by one I take them down. We can run and hide, ain’t going down without a fight.” Essentially, One Direction will save a girl from the guys that she comes across in life who have bad intentions.

One of the key ideas One Direction continues to add into each album is that they will protect and save you from disaster. They want to protect in a guardian angel sort of sense and I really admire that aspect of their albums.

The bands new style and sound has produced the perfect album. Their evolving style keeps fans interested and invested in their artistic vision. A plethora of songs on the album are euphoric and gentle, while others are edgy and passionate.

Listening to these new melodies has really brought a smile to my face and has made my heart feel light again. If you haven’t given the album a listen, you’re really missing out! You never know, one of these songs could end up being your new favorite that sticks with you for a long time.

The Hunger Games Comes to a Close

Real or Not Real: “Mockingjay: Part 2” was an excellent movie that glued me to my seat and my eyes to the screen? Real. The movie premiered on November 20, 2015, and it was a very exciting end to the story of Katniss Everdeen.

“Mockingjay: Part 2” begins right where “Mockingjay: Part 1” ends. The story follows Katniss and her many struggles to be the face of the rebellion against the Capitol. She keeps herself busy by fully embracing her role as Mockingjay and learning as much as she can about the Capitol. Katniss also tries to help Peeta Mellark recover from his imprisonment in the Capitol.

The two most impressive feats of the film are Katniss’ relationships and emotions towards other people and the movie’s suspense. Katniss’ relationships with many characters are strengthened in this movie. Everdeen becomes very close to her friends and even closer to her family, especially her sister Primrose.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss in the film, performed wonderfully in the emotional scenes of the film. There are many parts of the movie that deal will sadness and mourning, and I was so touched, that I started to tear up while I was watching.

Mockingjay katniss

For fans of the book series, “Mockingjay: Part 2” sticks very close to the book. I was pleased to see the plot stick with the books, but I also enjoyed the movie embellishments. During many of the scenes during the invasion of the Capitol, it was very suspenseful. I read the book before watching the movie, so I knew when certain parts were going to happen. I held my breath many times in the theatre, anticipating when certain events would unfold.

I was minutely disappointed by the movie, but only by small parts that happened in the book and not in the film. All in all, these small changes did not affect the epicness of the movie and my feelings toward it.

I give “Mockingjay: Part 2” five out of five stars. I consider this movie to be the best film of the Hunger Games franchise. I laughed, I cried, I gasped and I held my breath. I promise, “Mockingjay: Part 2” is worth seeing.

Hello, I’m Sorry

On October 23, two of the largest musicians in the industry released singles. Justin Bieber and Adele released singles that both made the top ten charts.

Bieber’s song “Sorry” is the second single of three songs he decided to release from his unreleased album called, “Purpose.” On Twitter, Bieber told his fans “It’s my best work yet. Promise.”

He also talked about this being a new era of his music. More mature and developed than his previous albums, Bieber was ready to move on from his past and his previous reputation and sound. “There needs to come a time where they’re just like, ‘We get it.’ And I think putting out a song saying I’m sorry kinda puts the finishing icing on the cake. I’m ready to just move on,” said Bieber about having a new start.

Along with the pop song, Bieber also released a music video for the single. The music video is a dance video featuring an all female dance crew, directed and choreographed by Parris Goebel. Bieber is not shown throughout the entire music video.

Coincidentally, pop/alternative singer, Adele best known for her song “Rolling in the Deep,” decided to release a single on the same day Bieber’s “Sorry” was released.  One may suspect a bit of tension between the two artists due to releasing their singles on the same day. Bieber denies any tension by saying, “Here’s the thing,”  I’m such a big fan of Adele, so that doesn’t bother me not even one bit. I love her.” The only difference between the release of the two songs was Adele had not released a song or album in three years.

However, the silence did not go without explanation. “I have to take time and live a little bit. There were a good two years between my first and second albums, so it’ll be the same this time.” Adele clarified.

Now, Adele is back and better than ever. Adele’s new album, “25,” received a rating of five out of five stars on iTunes. “Hello” is the first and only single that has been released from the album so far.

Similar to Bieber, Adele’s album also signifies a new beginning. “My last record was a break up record, and if I had to label this one I would call it a make up record,” Adele typed in a tweet on October 21st. “‘25’ is about getting to know who I’ve become without realising” Adele continued.

Fans of both artists can anticipate new sounds and themes in the newest albums that have yet to come out.

Is It “Dark” in Here? (Spoilers!)

The “Supernatural” season 11 premiere aired on October 7, 2015, and it has a completely new, different and darker feel than the past seasons. The premiere allowed a lot of new events to unfold. During the season 10 finale, Sam and Dean Winchester, the main characters of the show, get rid of the Mark of Cain, releasing an ancient force called The Darkness into the world. In this first episode, The Darkness infects people and turns them into “zombies” with black veins. The zombies try to destroy anything and infect anyone in their way.

Supernatural-season-11-episode-1-Sam-Dean-Mike-Jenna
The Winchesters watch as Mike gives his newborn daughter to Jenna in order to keep her safe. Photo courtesy of tvbuddy.com.

New characters are introduced in this episode as well. When driving into a devastated town, the brothers run into Jenna, an injured police deputy. After showing her that they were not infected, they took her to a nearby hospital to help her. Sam wanders through the hospital and notices a zombie trying to get into a locked closet. After the monster suddenly dies (apparently the infection kills quickly), Sam meets two more people, Mike, an infected man, and his newborn daughter.

After meeting up again, Dean suggests to kill the man and save his daughter, but Sam, as always, disagrees. Sam begins his speech about the old family motto: “Saving people, hunting things, the family business.” Sam reveals a major plot hole in the show, the ever-repeating struggle that the boys go through: always hiding secrets from each other and constantly sacrificing everything to help each other. Sam says to Dean, “This isn’t on you. It is on us. We have to change.”

However, neither of the boys changes at all in the episode. Dean does not tell Sam that he had talked to The Darkness herself– yes, The Darkness is a “her.” The Darkness told Dean that they were connected and showed him that she has the Mark of Cain as well. She told him that no matter what, they would help each other. How can he help her, and how can she help him?

Sam is also keeping secrets from Dean. Dean, Jenna and the baby, named Amara by her father (who decided to stay in the hospital to keep her safe), escape the hospital while Sam distracts the zombies that are there. Sam hides in a closet from the creatures, only to find one right behind him. Sam kills the zombie, but in the process he gets her blood in his mouth. (Why is it always blood?) In the end of the episode, Sam looks into the mirror and sees black veins crawling up his neck. Surprize, surprize, something is wrong with Sam (again) and he has not told Dean (again).

Enough with the Winchesters for now. Back in season 10, the finale left us waiting to see the fight between Crowley, the demon king of Hell, and Castiel (Cas), an angel who was put under an attack-dog spell by the evil witch Rowena. In the premiere, Crowley escapes Cas until it is safe again. Meanwhile, Cas is captured by other angels and taken to a secret place to be tortured for breaking Metatron, another bad angel, out of Heaven’s prison. Junior Marisa Patten shows her worry for her favorite character. “Castiel has been abducted by angels, so I suppose there will be a lot of torturing … along with the spell that Rowena placed on him.”

When Crowley returns to safety, his demons tell him that The Darkness was released and it is not a fairytale as he thought. The demons mentioned that there was a commotion from the Cage, the Hell-prison that contains the archangels Lucifer and Michael that has not been mentioned much since the season five finale. Since the two archangels were trying to warn the demons about The Darkness, this force is definitely a big deal. Also, it could mean the return of the two angels (and the Apocalypse?).

Speaking of The Darkness, she shares a similar feature with someone. The baby Amara is shown with the Mark of Cain exactly where the Darkness has it. What does this mean? Does this mean that the baby is The Darkness herself, or is she just a baby destined to do evil? What will the boys do when they discover this?

Many new events, plots and characters have come into play for the season 11 premiere, and there are high hopes for the upcoming episodes.

Lovato is Feeling “Confident”

She’s baaaaaaack. Pop singer Demi Lovato has released her fifth studio album on October 16th. Lovato has had quite a year in 2015. From releasing her own skin care line to getting a new puppy, Lovato has still managed to find the time to release an album.

Lovato first mentioned the album on August 26th by tweeting “Are you ready for this?” and attached an image of her album cover. On the same day, Lovato managed to gather a handful of her celebrity friends, from Kim Kardashian West to Pete Wentz, and had all of them tweet a different song title that would appear on the album.Lovato finished off by tweeting that the title of the album was “Confident.”DDLovato

The album was available for pre-order on August 28th. Lovato has done a number of interviews to promote her album as well. She performed on the MTV VMAs, Jimmy Kimmel, and also had a set of pool parties where she performed at to promote her album.

Lovato has dropped two singles off of “Confident;” the first was released in the beginning of the summer, which explains the title, “Cool for the Summer.” Her next single “Confident’ was recently dropped on September 18th.

The production of this album has also been a personal milestone of reinventing herself. Lovato explained the motive behind her album during an interview with Ryan Seacrest saying “The thing with my music, I’ve spent so long just kind of people pleasing, making everybody happy with being the best role model I can be. At the endof the day, yes, I’m outspoken about the things I believe in: mental health, advocacy work, I have my own charity. I have all these things that make me a role model. But at the same time, none of these things are representing the daring person I am. I’m no longer serious. I’m done with the sob stories and the tales. New chapter, new life, new album, new single, this is a completely new Demi. There’s definitely a lot of provocative songs on the album.”

Later in the interview Seacrest and Lovato talked music and keyed in on  what audiences can expect to hear. “There’s also an element that I really wanted to bring to the music. One was the rock element, I wanted to kind of bring back the rock-pop music, but I have a lot of rhythmic flairs in there as well. I grew up listening to soul music and then I only listened to metal music for a while. I have all these influences that influenced this
album and me growing up.” Lovato explained.

The release date for Lovato’s album is set to be October 16th and what fans will be able to expect after the release from Lovato is still a surprise.
